Gardner, Illinois
Miss Mary Showalter was born near Dover, Wayne County, Ohio, March 20, 1851, and passed away April 2, 1918 at her home in Gardner, Illinois, at the age of sixty-seven years and twelve days. When she was four years old, her parents moved to Illinois, locating near Gardner, where she has lived ever since. October 18, 1872, she and John Tinsman, who died in 1886, were united in holy matrimony. To this union were born five children, Edward, Elizabeth, and Orpha have proceeded her in death; Elmer, living at Cambridge, Nebraska, and John at home. On September 6, 1888, she and Davis R. Doud , who died in March, 1917, were united in marriage. To their union were born two children, Mrs. Florence Carr of Morris, Illinois and Mrs. Harriet Shafer of Evansville, Indiana. There are nine grandchildren and three step-children, namely: A. L. Doud, Denver, Colorado; F. R. Doud, Gardner, Illinois; and Amos Doud, Edgewater, Colorado. There are also two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Mikesell, Marseilles, Michigan and Mrs. Emma Woods, Lansing, Minnesota., and four brothers, namely, Daniel Showalter, Cambridge, Nebraska; Benjamin Showalter, Davenport, Nebraska; David Showalter, Gardner, and Jacob Showalter, of the State of Washington.
Mrs. Doud has been an invalid for over twenty years. Thru this suffering she has exercised great patience. She was a member of the Church of God and a devout Christian.
The funeral was held Friday at 1:30 P.M. from the home. Rev. W. W. Howard, a former pastor of the Gardner M. E. church, delivered the sermon, taking for his text: "The Ten Virgin: Being ready for the Wedding Feast." Rev. J. B. Speaker, pastor of the local M. E. church offered prayer, read from the 15th chapter of Corinthians and read the obituary. The Misses Agnes Hansen and Mable Hansen sang "Shall We Gather at the River," "Sweet Peace, the Gift of God" and "In the Hour of Trial." Miss Bernice Weber accompanied them on the piano. Internment was made in the Wheeler Cemetery. Elmer Tinsman of Cambridge, Nebraska; Rev. R. G. Shafer, wife and baby, of Evansville, Indiana, and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Carr and children of Morris were among the relatives from a distance who attended the funeral.
