- Floyd Doud Shafer
The Reverend Floyd Doud Shafer was born June 19, 1916 in Grayville, Illinois to the Reverend Rollin Grant Shafer and Harriet Josephine Doud Shafer. After graduating from Hanover College in 1938, he studied for the ministry at the Louisville Presbyterian Seminary, where he received the Andrew Patterson Fellowship for superior scholarship at his graduation in 1941. He was ordained to the ministry of the United Presbyterian Church in Valparaiso, Indiana in 1941. He entered Union Theological Seminary in New York City where he studied under the theologians Paul Tillich and Martin Buber, receiving a M.Div. in 1942. On March 23, 1942 he was united in marriage with Carol Jeanne Parsons of Louisville, Kentucky, a union of 54 years. From 1942-1945 he served as a Chaplain in the U.S. Army, the 96th Division, 382nd Regiment, 2nd Battalion, accompanying the troops on the landing and invasion of Okinawa.
Pastor Shafer served pastorates in Altoona, Pennsylvania; the Fourth Presbyterian Church, Louisville, Kentucky; the Fourth Presbyterian Church, Knoxville, Tennessee; Salem Presbyterian Church, Salem, Indiana; Yale Presbyterian Church, Yale, Michigan; and Westminster Presbyterian Church, Columbus, Ohio. A writer as well as a pastor, he wrote Sunday School lessons for Crossroads, as well as numerous articles, book reviews, and a book on liturgy. He was a founding member and former president of the Ecumenical Liturgical Association and of the Presbyterian Liturgical Association. In Columbus, Ohio, he served for a number of years on the Archbishop's Liturgical Council.
He is survived by his children: Carol Jeanne Bedwell, and husband Max, of Salem, Indiana; Floyd Shafer, and wife Saam Soon, of Robinson, Illinois; and Rebecca McLaughlin, and husband Mac, of Tucson, Arizona. Grandchildren: Dr. James Apple and wife Shinobu; Daniel Apple, Jeff Moredock and wife Shelley; Jon Moredock and wife Lordes, Josh Shafer, Matt Shafer, and Elizabeth Shafer. Great-grandchildren: Zoey Elise Moredock and Anthony Shafer.
Pastor Shafer retired from the active ministry in 1981 and then served the Sciota Valley Presbytery as a pulpit supply pastor, retiring in 2002 as his health declined.
