John Shafer died Saturday evening at the home of his father, near Oatsville, after a brief illness with abscess of the liver. He had undergone a surgical operation, but it failed of the much desired effect. He was born in 1874, being 38 years old. Several years ago he was married to Miss Florence Helsley of our town, who preceded him to the great beyond, by just two years and six months. Surviving him are two small children, his father, one sister and two brothers, beside a host of relatives and friends. He was a member of the Oatsville Presbyterian church, where the funeral services were held at Monday morning, conducted by Rev. W.M.Clark of Oakland City. The funeral procession was over a mile in length--a better tribute to his worth and popularity than the writer could pen in his behalf. Burial was made at the Adkinson cemetery. Pike County Democrat November 1, 1912
John had to seal off part of his farm land for settlement in divorce to Myrtle Campbell. Family stories relate that the reason for the divorce was "she was mean to the children."
